A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Okavango Delta in Botswana is the world’s largest inland delta, with the flood waters originating from Angola reaching a peak in July each year. As this coincides with Botswana’s dry season large populations of mammals migrate from the dry hinterland to the Delta oasis, resulting in superb game viewing and excellent birding, particularly in the breeding season.
The Okavango Delta is at the centre of Botswana’s safari industry and features some of Africa’s premier camps and lodges. Access to the Delta lodges is by light aircraft from the safari hub of Maun, considered to be the gateway to the Okavango Delta. Accommodation options range from wilderness camping to luxury tented safari lodges. Activities are seasonal and may be subject to water levels with some lodges offering water based activities only whilst others may offer both water and land based game viewing.
