The South African government has established a task team to investigate the unintended consequences of the recently introduced regulations whereby children under 18 years are required to carry copies of their unabridged birth certificates when arriving at or departing from South Africa.
Numerous cases of families being denied boarding at their point of departure because documentation was lacking or insufficient has been reported. Introduced originally to assist in combatting child trafficking, the new regulations are considered to be too onerous and are in fact hampering the growth of tourism.
